Blog Post Two!
1. Students are teachers are so influenced to use technology in the classroom because it is significantly easier and more accessible. As society becomes more technology oriented and technology is advancing so quickly right in front of us, teachers and students are trying to keep up with the fast paced movements. If we did not keep up with it then we would be considered out of date and old-schooled. Referring specifically to elementary education and elementary aged children, most of what they do is online. Their parents keep them occupied by giving them an Ipad or Iphone therefore they are learning how to use them and use technology as such a young age. I think that when teachers are using Ipads or more advanced technology in the classroom is engages the students and could even possibly get them to learn better since they are well equip on how to use an those types of devices. Although along with everything in life, there comes the downfalls of having too much technology in the classroom too.
2. While reading these ISTE Standards for Educators I found it really interesting to learn about all of them. One that really stood out to me was the first one that was titled "Learner". I really liked this viewpoint for educators because I feel as if sometimes teachers can think they know everything about anything but really as they go along with their life they are continuing to learn too, just like the students they are teaching. The educators are also able to learn from their students too, by doing this it sets a great example for the students to see that learning can take place outside of the classroom and from others than just the teacher. A skill that I would view as outside of my current skill set would be the standard labeled "Designer". I would say this because this requires being creative and coming up with personal and unique lesson plans or skill checks. I am a decently creative person but coming up with brand new lesson plans I would want to look off of others ideas just because I feel like since they already have lesson plans typed out they have a decent idea of what they are doing.
3. I think I would have to agree with the label "digital native" for today's youth. For the sheer fact that majority of the youth today are born into technology. It is almost inevitable to escape for the youth. In today's society a lot of parents use technology to calm or quiet their children in public or keep them entertained at home. Even before children can choose if they want to have technology shoved in their face it already is, so this starts children's knowledge of how to use these devices. I definitely think there is a difference between how my generation vs how teachers / older generations use technology. The digital native generation seems to be much quicker and can adapt quicker to changes in technology as opposed to the digital immigrants. I can think of a few examples in my own learning experiences when teachers are trying to figure out how to get something connected or something uploaded and they are struggling with it but all of the students know what to do. I can't really say that the difference has made neither a positive nor a negative impact on my learning. I think that if the teacher really wanted to get something uploaded online or wanted to do something with the computer they would always just as a student or google it. It is crazy to think of the differences between me and my future students in terms of technology because in my family I have always been the most tech savvy person and have helped both my parents and my younger brothers. I think that since I will be teaching elementary aged students, there will not be too much use of computers because I value handwriting notes or tactile practice of holding a pen or pencil. Both of these things are typically not used with computers or Ipads.
4. I have commented on Malyce's blog and found it really interesting to read the differences and similarities that we share on the topics of technology. Reading someone else's perspective makes you look at things from a different view point. I also commented on Olivia Wilkening's blog post. She brought up many good points about the ISTE standards and gave me a different lens to look through about them.
Hi, Olivia
ReplyDeleteI could not help but laugh when reading the sentence "Their parents keep them occupied by giving them an Ipad or Iphone therefore they are learning how to use them and use technology as such a young age" . I think I might do the same thing to my kid later. :)
You made a good point that the educators are able to learn from their students too. I am learning from all my students in this class.
I agree with you. But could you elaborate on downfalls of having too much technology in the classroom?
